A First-Timer's Guide to Nails: Easing the Common Worries (Off, Paragel & Longevity)
目次 ▾

Neatly finished fingertips lift your mood a little every time they catch your eye. Nails aren't for someone else — they're time you give to yourself, an easy bit of self-care. Still, the first time it's all unknowns: "What's an 'off'?" "Will my natural nails get damaged?" "What do I even say?" Here we clear up the things first-timers stumble over, one gentle step at a time.

Worry 1: My nails are short / not pretty — is that okay?

Completely fine. Taking nails from un-groomed to lovely is exactly the nail artist's job. You don't need to tidy your cuticles beforehand either — some worry they'll look unkempt if they don't, but cuticle care is part of the service, and doing it yourself can actually damage the skin. Only if your nails are extremely long does a small trim beforehand help; otherwise, come as you are. If bitten nails or peeling layers worry you, just ask — we'll start there.

Worry 2: What should I do before I go?

  • Don't wear polish: come bare-nailed if you can — home polish removes easily.
  • Check the "off" fee for gel from another salon: removing gel applied elsewhere may cost extra. Confirm when booking.
  • Bring a picture of the look you want: a screenshot from social media or a magazine conveys your image accurately.
  • Check booking, payment, and cancellation rules: they vary by salon. Knowing the lateness and cancellation policy in advance puts you at ease.

Worry 3: What even is gel? How is it different from polish?

Gel is cured under a dedicated lamp; it has lovely shine and color and lasts about 3–4 weeks. There's no drying time and it resists chipping. For how it differs from quick-drying polish, see the gel vs. polish Q&A.

Worry 4: I don't get "off." Can I remove it myself?

This is where first-timers struggle most — and where care is essential. Never force lifted gel off. Gel bonds tightly to your nail, so peeling it away takes the surface keratin layer with it, leaving nails thin and damaged. Even if it lifts, don't pick at it — have it removed at the salon. The simple rule: get it removed at the salon each time you rebook.

Worry 5: Will continuing gel damage my natural nails?

Many people worry that "gel thins your nails." The main causes are over-filing and forceful removal, so choosing a salon with no-filing Paragel and base-preserving fill-in lets you continue while protecting your nails. See the Paragel & fill-in Q&A and our guide to nails that grow strong.

Worry 6: How long does it last? How often do I come?

Gel lasts about 3–4 weeks. Past that it grows out and lifts more easily, and leaving it can cause green nail. Rebooking every 3–4 weeks ultimately protects your nails. See the longevity Q&A.

Worry 7: What should I tell the artist?

You don't need the perfect words. At the counseling on arrival, share the look you're after (your saved picture), your work and daily life (hands-on job / nothing too flashy), and any nail concerns — and your artist will help shape a design and length that suit you.

Worry 8: How much does it cost?

Price depends on technique, design, length, and whether removal is needed. A simple single color is from ¥7,500. See the pricing Q&A.
